Senior Civil Designer.

Required skills:

- Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD desktop design software with 3D Civil Design.

- Experience with land development design, with an emphasis in Mining/Heavy Industrial, mass earthwork, roadway, railroad, site grading, buried utilities and storm water design.

Bonus skills:

- Mass Earthwork and Stormwater design software.

- This position will start as a 3 month+ contract, but there is a longer-term possibility.

MAP and Civil working together

Yesterday I attended the Seize the Opportunity - ProSoft PowerLaunch 2011, and was throughly impressed by the What the Hell are these Map tools doing in Civil 3D, presentation given by AutoDesk employee Peter Southwood. One of the tips he gave was to connect to images instead of inserting them into the drawing. no only does this reduce the overall drawing file size it saves system resources also. I was unable to find any posted online by Peter, but I did find an AU OnLine article that details the image connect and much more. So take a look and see if it works for you.

Civil v. Civil3D

It looks like those of you who saved a few bucks and went with the "scaled down" AutoCAD Civil product may have been on the correct path. According to Civil3dPedia Autodesk Announced yesterday they would be discontinueing the AutoCAD Civil product, and those on Subscription would be recieving AutoCAD Civil3D for the remainder of their subscription contracts.

It will be interesting to what will happen when it comes time to renew subscription contracts for those companies with both products.

Shane's question about intersections

Wendy here...Shane from the Forest Service asked me a question about a problem he was having with intersections. He was getting an error message. I did a little video for him about doing an intersection on his project. This video is mostly for Shane to view but it might be interesting to others so that they can see how an intersection goes together.

Civil 3D Coordinate Conversions

I came across a post from Civil3D.com that references an article dealing with coordinate conversions an Civil 3D. The article was originally written by Edward-James Surveying, Inc. for 2008 but has been recently updated for 2010. If any of you have struggled with this option in Civil 3D as much as I have then you should enjoy the article. And please if you are struggling with this please let AutoDesk know so they will make fixing this a priority.

We had about 10 people at our meeting last night including our dedicated members from Evanston Wyoming and Shaan Hurley from Autodesk. It's always nice to have Shaan at our meetings, I know he is super busy but if he is in town he always shows up. If you haven't up to now you should check out his blog here: http://autodesk.blogs.com/between_the_lines/. He has a lot of good stuff about Autodesk, AutoCAD and just geeky stuff in general. He also has information about other user groups in Utah. He mentioned that the Revit User Group was getting fired up again and there is also an Inventer User Group getting organized.

We had some discussions mostly about corridors and solving problems that people were having with them. I'm not sure we solved a lot but at least we talked about possible solutions.

Our next meeting is planned for March 10th so mark it on your calendar and plan to attend. The location will be the same.

Location: CLC Associates at 420 East South Temple, Suite 550, in Salt Lake City – This is the same location that we had the last user group meeting but may be a new location to some of you. Enter from 4th East into the garage entrance that is closest to South Temple. Take the elevator to the 5th floor and CLC will be right in front of you as you get off the elevator.

Topics: We will have a presentation about Civil 3D and a general discussion where you can discuss Civil 3D with your peers.

ProSoft is having an event on October 20th in Salt Lake (also in Idaho Falls on the 22nd) with Pete Southwood from Autodesk. He is Autodesk's Geospatial Technical Specialist and Evangelist and this should be a great event for those of you using or wanting to use the GIS capabilities of Civil 3D. You'll need to RSVP with ProSoft to attend, their number is 888-263-0393, let them know that you are a member of WAUG. This is a free event. Even if you think you don't use GIS much in Civil 3D you will probably get something out of attending.

New Update for Civil 2010

For those of you that have AutoCAD Civil 2010 (not Civil 3D 2010) Update 2 has been posted and is ready for download.

The update resolve over 30 issues and it includes Update 1 (for those that have not yet installed it).

Adventures in QTO and Hydrology

Last night we had some great presentations and discussion on QTO (Quanty Take Offs) and the Hydrology tools in Civil 3D 2010. We would like to thank Jake Felshaw from McNeil Engineering and Gareth Powell from Uintah Engineering (all the way from Evanston Wyoming) for being willing and taking the time to prepare those presentations. They did an excellent job and helped all of us become more familiar with these powerful tools. There were some good discussions about these topics plus discussions about other issues. Thanks go too, to CLC Associates and Bridget Elliott for allowing us to use their conference room. It was a beautiful location.

If you have never been to one of our user groups one of the best part about our meetings is when our members ask other members about solving problems. This meeting is organized by and for the benefit of our members. Please tell your friends who may be interested.

We are always looking for presentations and presenters for our group so if you have any ideas please let us know by leaving a comment or emailing one of the officers. If there are topics that you would like to be presented let us know that as well.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the same location. We hope to see you there.

Blog changes

I've been doing some updates to the blog today. I've added a badge that will link you to AUGI and some gadgets that will help you to subscribe to this blog. I've also added a badge that will link you to WAUG yahoogroup. The WAUG yahoogroup is a simple way for users to ask other members of WAUG questions. Up to now this hasn't generated a lot of emails so don't worry about getting to many emails, in fact there is a setting that will allow you to only receive one email per day with a summary of all the emails for that day.

Mapexport fix

User Group meeting July 14, 2009

On July 14th we had a user group meeting and had about 12 people in attendance. We talked about the ribbon in 2010 and some of the new survey functionality in Civil 3D 2010 among other things.

During the discussion Matt mentioned that you may be able to add a toolbar quickly to the ribbon as a panel. After checking that out the next day Matt says that the toolbar had been a panel that had been removed from the ribbon.

Our next meeting is planned for Wednesday, September 16th, 2009. Please put that on your calendar and plan on attending. We are hoping that we will have presentations on stormwater and QTO (quantity take-off) in Civil 3D 2010.
